Executive Summary

1. What Are Session Types?
A session type describes a communication protocol as a type. Rather than typing a channel as Chan<Message> (which says nothing about ordering), a session type says things like:

The type system ensures that every usage of the channel in your code follows this prescribed sequence. If you try to receive before sending, or forget to close the session, it is a compile error.

- Session fidelity — the protocol is followed step-by-step; no message is skipped or doubled

Duality

Ergonomics Gap
The biggest practical barrier is ergonomics. Rust session type libraries produce type errors that are notoriously difficult to interpret. The protocol types are Rust types, but deeply nested generic types with continuation chains produce error messages that mention internal encoding types rather than protocol semantics. This makes debugging hard without deep familiarity with the encoding.
Dialectic's Session! macro mitigates this somewhat by providing a readable protocol DSL, but error messages still expose the underlying encoding.
Expressiveness vs. Deadlock Freedom Trade-off
Standard linear session types guarantee deadlock freedom but at a cost: they cannot express shared resources (channels used by more than one party), some forms of recursion, or certain cyclic topologies that are actually deadlock-free. The Projection Problem
Not all global types project cleanly to local types. If a global type specifies an interaction between A and B that C needs to "observe" without participating, projection becomes ambiguous. "Mergeability" conditions constrain which global types are projectable. Current MPST research explores weakening these conditions to make more realistic protocols expressible.
Dynamic Participants
Classical session types assume a fixed, known set of participants established at session initiation. Real systems have dynamic participants: workers join and leave, services scale up and down. Integration with Mainstream Languages
Full session type integration requires linear types in the host language, which most mainstream languages lack. They can ensure "you can only send T on this channel" but not "you must send T before receiving U."
The theoretical connection: session types can be encoded in effect systems and vice versa (Orchard & Yoshida, POPL 2016), but session types are more restrictive (ruling out more programs) in exchange for stronger correctness properties.
For agent runtimes: effect systems are better for loosely coupled systems where interaction order is flexible. Session types are better when the protocol is well-defined and order matters.
Capability Tokens
Capability-based security uses unforgeable tokens representing permissions. Applied to communication, a capability token might represent "the right to send one message to worker W". This enforces access control but not protocol ordering.
Combining capabilities with session types is natural: a session type is a capability — it represents the right to use a channel in a specific way. The session-types crate in Rust implicitly does this: holding a channel of type Send<T, S> is the capability to send T and then use the channel as S.
Contract-Based Verification (Design by Contract)
Traditional DbC (Eiffel, assert, pre/postconditions) checks invariants at runtime. The trade-off: easier to write, catches errors at runtime rather than compile time, handles more complex non-sequential invariants. Agent Behavioral Contracts (2025) takes this route for AI agents, accepting runtime detection in exchange for being able to express probabilistic and semantic invariants that a type checker cannot handle.
Recommendation for agent runtimes: use both. Session types for the structural protocol (ordering of sends/receives, message types, branch selection), behavioral contracts for semantic invariants (results satisfy quality constraints, operations stay within budget, safety properties hold). They are complementary.
Typestate Programming
Typestate is a broader generalization: the type of an object changes as it transitions through states, and operations are only available in certain states. Session types are typestate applied to communication channels. Typestate can be applied to any stateful resource (file handles, database connections, authentication state) not just channels.
Rust's ownership system enables typestate programming natively. The typestate crate and patterns like Builder<Unvalidated> → Builder<Validated> are common Rust idioms implementing typestate informally.
